Tanzania
This stunningly diverse country is synonymous with vast open plains, iconic wildlife and beautiful natural wonders.
The Serengeti National Park is world renowned for the quality of the wildlife and immense landscape. It plays host to the wildebeest migration and has wonderful resident wildlife as well. The magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, Ruaha, Katavi and Nyerere National Parks are all big draws. Each offers excellent wildlife viewing, dramatic scenery and great guiding. Smaller gems like Tarangire and Manyara have a charm of their own and work beautifully in combination with their northern counterparts.
The improbably beautiful Mahale Mountains, far to the west, offer something truly special – tracking habituated chimpanzees through the lush forest on the hillsides above Lake Tanganyika.
From lightweight mobile camps to beautiful, luxurious lodges, the accommodation choices are as diverse as the landscape they sit in. Add to this the range of activities, among which are game drives, walking safaris, summiting the ‘Roof of Africa’ (Mount Kilimanjaro), boat trips or sleep outs under the stars, and Tanzania has a huge amount to offer.
A safari here combines brilliantly with time spent on the coast or in Zanzibar, or perhaps going further afield to Kenya or gorilla tracking in Uganda or Rwanda. Visit throughout the year, though the months of April and May can be wet and there is an increased chance of rain in November.
