Nyerere National Park is a fantastically large and remote region – the size of Switzerland and the biggest in East Africa – with plenty of water, opening up a whole range of activities. Best of all, it has only few lodges, all fantastic in their own way, offering tastes of luxury without losing the essential authenticity of a perfect safari. There are good populations of wild dog here along with lion, hippo, zebra, giraffe, sable, kudu and eland.
One of the finest areas is found north of the Rufiji River, where the landscape is dominated by doum palms curving over the Rufiji River, Lake Tagalala and countless oxbow lakes and deep lagoons. These waterways provide superb natural passages for boats, and bird sightings in particular, come quick and fast. Above the river the rolling grassy woodlands and plains rise to rocky outcrops, dotted with volcanic hot springs. Walking safaris are fantastic here, with the opportunity to fly camp under the stars another magical activity.
