Stretching some 200km along the Cape coast, the Garden Route starts in Mossel Bay and finishes in the town of Stormsrivier, just south of Port Elizabeth. Along the route there is great scenery, some lovely walking, endemic fynbos, and plenty of glorious beaches. Among the principal, and most scenic, towns along are Knysna, Wilderness and Plettenberg Bay. Branch inland and the semi-arid Karoo makes an interesting diversion. It’s possible to drive the route in three or four days, but a week or so allows the sights and scenery to be taken at a more leisurely pace.
