South Luangwa National Park

Often nicknamed ‘the valley of the leopard’ and still relatively unknown, this beautiful park is one of the best areas in Africa for high concentrations of wildlife. The lifeblood is the Luangwa River, one of the largest in Africa to have escaped the interference of man anywhere along its length.

Hippo are abundant and elephant meander back and forth as this great river winds its way through the valley providing an essential water source. There are plenty of lion, buffalo, crocodiles, hyena, giraffe and zebra. The birdlife won’t disappoint either, with a multitude of species including the beautiful carmine bee-eaters flitting around the banks from late August onwards.

The South Luangwa is a fabulous spot for a walking safari, whether multi-day walking from camp to camp or just a pre-breakfast stroll. Day and night drives allow exploration of all corners of the park and with so much to do, it’s a great choice for a family safari, particularly if travelling with teenagers. Accommodation ranges from simple bush camps to luxurious lodges and private safari houses.
