Strong currents and dense fog have long made Namibia’s northern coastline treacherous for sailors. The many shipwrecks scattered along this stark yet strikingly beautiful shore helped inspire its evocative name: the Skeleton Coast.
With only a handful of remote lodges, visitors can explore rusting wrecks, venture into towering dunes and dry riverbeds, and search for the extraordinary wildlife that survives here. Desert-adapted elephant and lion roam this unforgiving landscape, alongside giraffe, oryx, and other hardy species that have learned to thrive in one of Africa’s most inhospitable environments.
Despite its harsh appearance, life flourishes in surprising ways. Moisture carried in by the fog sustains a remarkable variety of plant species, while vast colonies of seals have made themselves entirely at home on the windswept sandy beaches.
