How to enjoy a riding safari with your non-riding partner

A riding safari is an amazing way to see the bush; silently traversing through the landscape and viewing wildlife from the back of a horse is an exhilarating experience. The horses are incredibly well-schooled, the guiding brilliant, and unsurprisingly a riding safari is often at the top of the wish list for experienced riders.

However, very often only one or two members of a family or party will ride whilst the others in the group are non-riders, or are perhaps not as experienced in the saddle. There are a number of excellent camps throughout Africa which look after riders and non-riders equally brilliantly, each party thinking they are having a better time.

Botswana is great for experienced riders with fast riding and excellent wildlife, Kenya has many camps offering riding safaris for all abilities, South Africa has plenty of options too and Namibia is superb for fast riding in exquisite scenery.

Depending on the country and camp chosen, activities in addition to the riding include wildlife drives, walking safaris, mountain biking and water based safaris such as boat trips, mokoro (canoe) safaris and fishing. The camps are in wildlife rich areas offering the chance to see animals such as elephants, lion, buffalo and plenty of plains game as well. This does mean that the rider has to be experienced in the saddle.

There are many destinations where less experienced riders, whether beginners or those wanting a gentler ride, can enjoy a riding safari alongside their more experienced travel companions. These properties offer excellent options for riding with plains game such as giraffe, zebra and rhino. Combining a riding safari with a more traditional safari where the larger wildlife and predators may be seen works extremely well in this instance, particularly for families.

Whether you are looking for multi-day mobile riding safari, a shorter lodge based stay or even just a property which offers riding as an activity, the opportunities and options are numerous across Africa and we would be delighted to assist you in finding the right option for you, so do please contact us.
