Majete Wildlife Reserve is a wonderful conservation success story with the results of a longstanding partnership between the Malawi government and African Parks bearing fruition. Rhino and cheetah are among species reintroduced and now Majete is the only park in Malawi to offer the chance to see the so-called big 5 of elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard.
The Shire River sets the eastern boundary and along with the Mkulumadzi River, provides vital water to the wildlife as well as a home for plentiful hippo and crocodile. There are myriad antelope species and some superb birdlife here. Day and night game drives reveal the land-based wildlife population. It’s a wonderful spot for an off-the-beaten-track safari with reliable wildlife viewing.
