Liwonde National Park

This thriving national park, with the Shire River at its heart, has healthy populations of elephant, hippo, and crocodile. A well-managed anti-poaching programme saw the re-introduction of lion, cheetah and wild dog in 2017 followed a couple of years later by the arrival of rhino. It’s a good spot for antelope, with sable, roan, waterbuck, impala and bushbuck among the plains game here. With more than 400 bird species recorded, the birding is excellent too.

Activities in Liwonde National Park include vehicle-based drives, walking, and boating safaris through the waters of the palm-lined Shire River. While it may not be as famous as some of southern Africa’s national parks, it’s a great choice for a relaxed few days on safari.
