This stunning lake makes up a sizeable portion of the country and is so big it can feel akin to being by the sea. Mountains meet sandy coves, a handful of lovely lodges dot the shoreline and islands, and the crystal-clear waters are alive with hundreds of colourful cichlid fish. It’s perfect for a week’s holiday on its own and equally good to top or tail a safari in either Malawi or Zambia.
Activities on and around Lake Malawi include snorkelling, sailing, kayaking, scuba diving, and waterskiing. On land, visitors can explore by bike, take island drives, and even marvel at St Peter’s Cathedral (one of Africa’s oldest). Birders won’t be disappointed, with plenty of feathered species to enjoy as well.
