Tarangire is an excellent and little visited reserve. The landscape comprises several permanent water courses and swamps, as well as extensive savannah and woodlands, and many baobab trees. The bird watching is superb year-round, with enough variety for a very rewarding day or two. The wildlife can be a little more scattered out of the dry season, but elephant viewing is phenomenal with around 3,000 gathering in the swamps during the dry season peak between July and November. Other wildlife includes tree climbing lions, zebra, eland, giraffe, hippo, buffalo and a plenty of smaller antelope species.
Tarangire packs a punch when it comes to safari activities with night drives, walking, fly camping all possible here alongside traditional game drives. The handful of safari camps here provide lovely, traditional-style accommodation.
