Volcanoes National Park

The spectacular Virunga Mountains stretch across northwestern Rwanda, and Volcanoes National Park protects the slopes of this important habitat which is home to the endangered mountain gorillas.

Tracking one of the habituated gorilla families is the reason most will visit this park and coming face to face with one of our closest relatives is certainly an awe-inspiring experience. With 12 habituated gorilla families in the park, including the Susa A group studied by Dian Fossey, successful tracking here, while never guaranteed, is relatively assured. The park is straightforward to reach from Kigali making a gorilla tracking safari an easy add on to a safari elsewhere in Southern or East Africa.
