The Kruger National Park is one the best, and largest, wildlife areas on the African continent. As well as the Big 5 of lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino, it is home to a profusion of other bird and wildlife. With a well-maintained network of roads and a multitude of accommodation options, from simple to opulent, it can get a little busy with human visitors too.
This is where the private concessions which border the main park provide a welcome alternative. While the wildlife can move freely between the two, vehicles cannot – only those associated with camps in the concession have access, offering a more peaceful safari with the same spectacular wildlife. The Sabi Sands is probably the most famous and has a well-deserved reputation for excellence. To the north, are lesser-known reserves like Timbavati and Klaserie which also provide huge swathes of pristine wilderness to explore.
