Lewa is an incredible success story on the conservation front. This 62,000 acre swathe of land in Kenya’s Meru county was formerly a cattle ranch but began to support endangered black rhino in the 1980s. Officially designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1995, and with the fences dropped between it and the neighbouring Borana Reserve in 2013, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy now provides a huge area for the rhino and other wildlife to roam safely.
The small handful of safari lodges here offer a wide range of activities including camel and horse riding, aerial exploration, participation in various conservation efforts, wildlife drives and walking. With so much to do it’s a particular paradise for family safaris.
